Dia de los Tripa

sunset in Juarez

[A tale of an insanely satisfying 30-odd hours in Juarez]

First, the food! We arrive in the late afternoon and start strolling around the city, winding through some residential areas that always start picking up in activity as the sun sets. Amazing smells of home food start making their way out of open windows and we would like to just knock on a door and ask one of the families to feed us. But alas, we are too polite so we find a stand down the street.

Others had the same idea, and are lining up at a neighborhood taco shop....

...with two kinds of tacos, fried intestines (right) and sauteed intestines (left):

Yes, they were good. Similarly chewy texture as calamari, and very spicy.

Later in the evening a visit to a favorite stop, another taco joint, this one more established and on Avenue Lerdo. We cannot get enough of their homemade red sauce, served in messy communal bowls:

Then back to the hotel to consult with the phonebook for any restaurants that we might want to explore.... we find this amusing entry:

In the morning we set off to find coffee and are largely disappointed, but I do finally take the plunge and eat raw produce from a street vendor, in this case a wonderful papaya that cost $.50 for the whole huge thing.

A smoothie stand does give us some horrible Nescafe, but hey, caffeine is caffeine, right? The smoothies, on the other hand, look damn tasty (in the blender so far is nopales - cactus paddles).

After some further wandering and general amusement at signage,

I realize that it is Sunday and therefore I must have menudo:

Sitting in a tiny cafe at a communal table, surrounded by both strangers

and ample condiments, I am quite happy:

Finally, one last meal (lunch), before we head back over the bridge. A favorite of mine lately - Huevos a la Mexicana:

And the slow walk over the bridge, back to the land of homeland security. Or something like it.
