Must....Break.... Sugar.... Fixation....
Part of my current 12-week workout/eating cycle gives me one day per week to go a little crazy and "cheat". Believe it or not, there is science behind this: if one's calories are lowered consistently, your body will lower your metabolism in response, eventually tanking your progress.
However, if you re-feed or overload occasionally, that metabolism slowdown could be avoided completely. You are sending the message to your body, "Hey! Check it out - I'm not starving after all - I'm eating LOTS of food!". And the body responds (hopefully) with, "Oh, yeah - you're right! Nevermind, I'll just keep burning at high speed like usual...."
The potential problem with an authorized free day is that one can save up any cravings they have during the week, especially "bad" cravings, and then indulge in them when the time is right. Those indugences can just make the cravings worse during the next cycle, and on, and on.... Where that's brought me is to a point where I am craving lots of sweet stuff. Assuming that craving sugar is itself a problem that needs to be fixed, I know how to do so - just stop with all sweet things for about a week. This is insanely hard, but it works. Unfortunately, "sweet stuff" includes sugar, fake sugar, fruit, even simple starchy carbs like potatoes and carrots - essentially you have to do an Atkins Induction phase to clear those items out of your system.
Is it worth it? Perhaps, especially with holiday (COOKIE!) season just around the corner. Ok, how about right after the next free day, as a compromise? Hmm.

**NOTE: How on GAWD'S GREEN EARTH can I justify this self-deprecating DIET talk when I express awe and admiration for people who worship cream and butter? You make the call. My excuse: I love food. I love rich and decadent food, usually in small quantities but sometimes to excess. I also love my health and my running hobby, and to further that end I do much in the way of working out and obsessing over the perfect homemade protein bar recipe. That's my story and so far, I've been sticking to it. Thanks for reading.
