A Day Without a Mom....
...is a day best left far, far away from any restaurant. Or, for that matter, any Mother's Day is ALWAYS better if you keep yourself far from the maddening crowd and cook some wonderful food at home.

Survey says 59% of Americans go out for Mother's Day. That's a shitload, just for your reference. Imagine that usual line that you can see snaking out from the Outback Steakhouse on the Friday night, each group clutching their pager and wondering if the advertised 60-90 minute wait is really going to be that long, and just multiply that by a factor of ENTIRE families of screaming kids and parents who don't normally go out to eat and you've got a formula for utter despair.

It's the most hated day of the year for most restaurant employees, especially waiters. Picture the worst and most stereotypically-parodied family drama over the Thanksgiving table - everyone has shown up with their baggage both literally and figuratively and Mom & Dad are just trying to make sure everyone gets along and has a "nice" time. Soon Big Sis is yelling at Little Brother because he forgot her birthday last year, and Older Brother's wife is near tears because the family prayer goes against everything she believes in and her husband won't stand up for her.....

Thankfully for society at large, these gatherings are kept hidden inside people's homes. Not so on Mother's Day. It is decided that Mom shouldn't cook and therefore instead of someone else cooking a nice meal at home, the whole family is drug out to a 'nice' restaurant to give Mom a treat for once. Yikes.

My brother just happened to be home yesterday so I bossed him into making breakfast for our Mom, and my other brother and I called and had nice conversations with her. It was a low-stress day for everyone, just as it should be.

I hope your Mother's Day was pleasant, whether you spent it with family or not.

Talk at me:
I made pancakes. And rhubarb bread. And bacon.

Ok ok... the bacon was admittedly consumed by the non-mothers in the house! :)
