Not just fat, but short, too?
Geez, Americans....
Apparently citizens of the United States are fatter than they think and say they are, according to two recent media reports.
The first, from Pew Research, states that when asked about how fat Americans are vs. how fat they personally are, the discrepancy doesn't quite add up....
The next one from just a few days ago via the Harvard School of Public Health, says that even the recent numbers of how many people are either overweight or obese is even higher than previously reported. Why? Because people say they are both TALLER and LIGHTER than they really are, which makes their BMI appear smaller (and therefore, healthier).
According to their report, the average female in the US, aged 30-34, says that she is 5'4.5" and 151lbs, making that a BMI of 25.9, or just barely "overweight". When the same studies are done and the subjects are actually brought in and measured, rather than quizzed over the phone, the numbers are just a wee bit different: 5'4" tall and 163lbs heavy. That's a BMI of 28 - solidly creeping towards "obese" - yikes.
[postscript: when looking this up, I saw yet another depressing headline that said teenagers who take virginity pledges are much more likely to lie later on when quizzed about whether or not they've had premarital sex, and whether or not they'd even pledged to stay a virgin...]
