Fatties or Not?
Americans are larger than ever before - but this interesting article bucks the trend and says maybe that's not such a bad thing, after all. Not that being grossly obese is good - just the possibility that being "stocky" or "thick" or however you want to phrase it is another phase in human development.

Big *and* Healthy?

I'm not convinced, however, that it really is good.... yet. I come from Slavic and German stock so fighting the general creep towards "thickness" is something I'll have to look forward to as the years continue to accumulate.

There are many accounts that state that remaining thin - WHILE getting all of your nutrients from foods rather than supplements - throughout your adult life, only to have just an extra bit of protective cush as an elderly person, is the best prescription for long and healthy aging.

Talk at me:
I would encourage you to seek out sound science, rather than rely on anecdotes and beliefs. Given that being heavier as you grow older increases life expectancy, that healthy adults naturally gain weight with aging, and that losing weight (voluntarily or unvoluntarily) is associated with increased mortality, the hysteria over a modest increase in average weights of populations in industrialized countries (which luckily experience less hunger and starvation among populations and simultaneously enjoy longer lifespans and better health) is laughable. But it is hugely prosperous for special interests and those with prejudice against fat people.

I agree, and I do not think my post had any of the faults that you warn me about. I noted that "extra cush" when elderly is desirable rather than just being skinny, AND I've linked to many websites that contain lengthy scientific studies - not 'beliefs'. The jury is still out on calorie restriction for longevity, but it generally has immediate positive health benefits in the short term, from better cholesterol to reduction in blood pressure.

I encourage everyone to read as much as you can about this and make your own judgement....
