Xmas Xtra: Sweets Round-up
My holiday baking for 2006 got a late start, but I made some new things, and have definitely turned out a few batches of old favorites.

First it was my mom's "Munchen" cookies, a crumbly and rich sandie-like refrigerator cookie. I have made the recipe before after finding out how amazingly simple it is (just four ingredients), and this time I started tinkering. Out went the standard almond meal, and in came ground toasted pepitas, powdered green chile, and minced fresh sage. The sage is unfortunately too muted, so I'd use more next time. The chile is barely detectable by me, so I don't know yet if that means it is just the right amount for normal humans.

Then I made a batch of the recently-requested/demanded "salty butter": soft chewy caramels topped with sea salt. The sweet/salty confection trend is in high gear finally, and it has made me wonder if I should sell these damn things, they are so addictive. I do not remember the temperature I brought the caramel to last year, so this year I followed the recipe exactly - once I cut them into squares I'll know if they reached the same nice consistency as the previous holiday's edition. I split the batch into 2/3 and 1/3 portions - the bigger half just getting the dusting of salt, and the smaller half getting a stir-in of a hefty dose of Vindaloo Curry seasoning. Yum!

Others making an appearance this year:
+ Strawberry Marshmallows. Yep, they can be made at home, and they are wonderful.
+ Walnut-Coffee Toffee. Crumbly because the sugar didn't caramelize quite right, but still very tasty.
+ Pine-nut White Chocolate Toffee. VERY crumbly - still problems with the sugar. Hmph.
+ Green Chile Sweet Roasted Pecans. A favorite.

I hope all of your holidays were sweet and buttery. :-)
