Gak-a-licious
Now, it may come as a complete suprise to many people and barely raise an eyebrow to others that I have a little bit of a fixation on protein bars.
I love 'em:
Big,

small,

sweet,

salty,

chewy,

crispy...

cookie!
Full-on dork mode is even attained when I enter notes on them into a spreadsheet, rating their flavor and nutritional profile. Some people claim that they all have an underlying "concrete" texture or fakey flavor to them, and many indeed do. Despite all that, they still appeal to me.
When I see them at the store, I buy at least one. When I have them at home, I eat at least one per day. If I don't have them, it's not a big deal. But beware the on-sale-at-Target box of Atkins Caramel Bars....

I am Charlie and they are my damn Candy Mountain.
The real problem with these things is that they are not food. Some friends of mine would readily call them GAK, and actually be disgusted with the thought of eating one over, say, a plate of steamed veggies. Do not get me wrong - I love steamed veggies. And tofu. And tea. And all of that other hippie crap. But I also adore red meat, coffee, heavy cream, and it is in the love of both categories that my status is that of a true omnivore, happy to eat any and all things if they taste good.
Mr. Pollan has gotten me thinking (drat!) and once again my thoughts have turned to Eating Clean. When I have given up sugar for a solid week all of my sweetie-HOO-HA cravings melted away. Now, that was interesting. Right at this moment I cannot imagine not perpetually being excited by a piece of chocolate or some ice cream, yet I've been in that place before and it was JUST FINE.
Plus, having real cream in my coffee was pretty cool, I must admit.
So, to detox on sugar or not? Hmm.
