"How ya like 'dem APPLES?!" Man, its been too long since I've been to New York. I just spent the last 10 minutes staring out the 52nd floor window of MetLife directly across to the Chrysler Building, and the window washer working on the very top tier of glass. I love the audacity of the stainless steel exterior. The doormen for that building should be required to drive DeLoreans. Heh. The poor receptionists on 52 were probably wondering when I was going to throw off my mousy exterior and do something hostile, so I left them to guard their phones.
Oh, yeah.... food. I ate in 'Indiatown' for lunch. Great place called Curry in a Hurry. This name sounds familiar, so I'm wondering if it is a little chain of sorts, or maybe its a commonly used name (like Gino's Pizza, etc). Its a good sign if all of the customers are local (to the cuisine), and they were. A flurry of unintelligible conversions hit us as we went to sit down. I had Chicken Marsale (?) - with a cream and tomato curry, and my friend had Chicken Saag - chicken with spinach. Both were amazing, and after we complimented the server he brought us some rice pudding on the house. Since tomorrow I will probably be chained to my desk through the noon hour, its a good thing we brought back the leftovers.
There is certainly no shortage of places to eat in NY, but this time I think I'd like to stay with the little ethnic joints - the places where you have to point to what you want, take-out is a major part of their business, the regulars stay for hours, and everyone that works there is likely part of the same extended family (or at least they act that way). I've got the beta on a great sounding bread place - might be my afternoon snack.

Stir fry! First attempt in a long time results in huge cloud of smoke in the kitchen.... why? Because I forgot you cannot use canola oil at high temperatures. It tends to turn into a big smoky mess in the pot. Oops. Attempt number 2 with sesame oil (about halfway down in the "below 375" list) was much better. Whew.
So the fry itself was with frozen mixed veggies, chicken, and spicy kung pao sauce. Nothing I concocted myself, so I'd rate the meal decent but not impressive.

Well, here it is. My damn blog. First I'd like to point out on of my recent most favorite time-killer reads at work - Black Table. So read and enjoy - its all written by late 20-somethings in one form of existential crisis or another (just like me).
Ah yes, the "F" part of this 'log: Last night I made risotto for a crowd of 4, including myself. Risotto is one of my recent "oh shit, why didn't I figure this out before?" cooking trends. It is so easy, I'm kicking myself for every night I ate chips instead of cooked. This is what I put in it: 1 garlic clove, 2T olive oil, 1 part of a shallot. Brown them all up, add about 2/3c rice, brown that up. Then start adding the broth - I used a vegetable/mushroom mixture. When its nearly done I took the 1/2lb of chicken breasts I had already cooked, chopped them up and quickly browned them in some more oil, plus parmesan cheese and tarragon. It worked rather nicely. Then I dumped that into the risotto, added a little more cheese and a splash of cream, and it was done. Not *quite* enough to feed 4 people, but we got by. Next time I'd do 1c of rice.
