Here's some quick photos of my lunch today (pan seared salmon with dill bechamel sauce):

One thing leads to another.... and then I just go completely out of control. Heh.
So, last Friday, I made all the food for a friend's party. It was meant to be a "easy to eat standing up but still enough to get you stuffed" affair, for 25 people. There were lots of leftovers, so its possible that if you have a party at 8pm you need to tell the guests specifically not to eat beforehand..... but anyway, here's what I made:
Salads
**Jicama salad with orange, red onion, and lime
*Watermelon tomato salad with spicy feta dressing
Dips (served with assortment of breads)
**Bean and roasted black walnut pate
*Roasted squash cumin
*Goat cheese ricotta terrine
Small things
Artichoke almond involtini
Sesame chicken bites with sweet hoisin sauce
Sweets
*Lemon Pudding Cakes
*Cardamom shortbread with blackberry preserves
*vegetarian
**vegan
Everything went over well, so that was a huge relief. I was of course worried that something would be horrible, everything would be just so-so, all kinds of things like that. But I guess staying up late 2 nights beforehand really helped - everything turned out fine. One small exception is that the chicken bite things were incredibly picky to make. Got oil spatters all over the damn kitchen. Perhaps a deep-fryer would work better next time. They went over very well, so I'm sure I'll make them again at some point.
I'm still eating some of the leftovers that the host didn't want to keep. Yummy.

"Get yer bitch-ass back in the kitchen! And make me some PIE!" - Cartman.
Its fall. What's the fall produce you think of? That's right, Apples. I bought a 30# bag of them from a local orchard for 10 bucks, and have used up approximately 5% of them in making 2 apple pies. Guess applesauce will have to be next.
Since I tend to throw myself into new projects, I not only made my first apple pie(s), I also made my first pie crusts at the same time. It turned out pretty well, though I wish I had lard on hand instead of the crisco/butter combo I ended up using.
The recipes were both out of Joy of Cooking, one for a "fruit pie" and one for a "fruit tart", which is just an open-faced pie with custard poured on the fruit to bind it.
Both turned out well, but I think the tart had a better reception overall.
One thing's for sure, however, and that is this: Pie is much harder to make than cheesecake, and has a lower perceived value. To wit: you can buy premade pie for less than good premade cheesecake. This is interesting, and a little sad because it means there is little market for making and selling good pies. I have seen and tasted the pies that Wild Oats sells (at $15+ a pop, they are certainly not cheap but they actually taste and look homemade), and it seems there are a lot less people out there willing to pay $15 for a pie than there are willing to drop $20-25 on a cheesecake. Weird.
